Headaches

A Clinical Overview of Neck-Related Headaches

Chronic neck pain and headache, especially at the back of the neck, often have a source in dysfunction of the cervical spine. The symptoms can be debilitating: limitations in range of motion, stiffness, and radiating pain partially to the head, shoulders, and back. At New Jersey Spine and Pain Institute, we understand the intricacies between spinal health and other neurological symptoms.

They are often symptomatic of structural conditions, including herniated cervical discs, arthritis in the cervical facet joints, or tight or weak muscles. Most cervicogenic headaches are commonly linked to dysfunction or inflammation around, or compression of, the nerve supply to the neck in the upper cervical vertebrae.  Symptoms of cervicogenic headache might also indicate visual disturbance, dizziness, nausea, neck pain , headache etc. It can be exacerbated while sitting for longer hours on end, or can trigger after whiplash.

At New Jersey Spine and Pain Institute, our specialized, board-certified spine and pain specialists utilize high-resolution imaging, careful medical histories, and thorough physical examinations to identify the cause of your symptoms with great accuracy. We draw on a multitude of records, follow-up appointments, consultations with experts in other fields, and much more to formulate a proper diagnosis and best plan for treatment. For patients who experience headache along with back pain, our headache specialist and pain specialist work in tandem to develop the best plan of care for their headache and neck pain. A full multidisciplinary care plan ensures that we are addressing the cause of the pain, while attempting to treat and control symptoms.

We offer evidence-based treatment options, beginning with conservative options such as physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, and selective injections, and then more invasive options as needed, including spine surgery fusion when clinically indicated. All treatments align with our pain management approach of achieving long-term relief and functional restoration without the heavy reliance on narcotics.

When proper alignment of the spine and integrity of the discs are compromised, overlapping symptoms can occur such as back pain and headache. These issues can develop from degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, or failed back surgery syndrome. By evaluating the spinal system and the necessary biomechanical and neurological connections we can address these conditions and customize our care plan to your unique architecture and health-related goals.
